“Look at all this people! Again!? Again!?”
Clutch.
Just this.
What, it’s not enough for you? Pff, okay.
Every fan of the heavy sound is familiar with the meaning of the word Clutch. It’s the pedal you press to switch gears in your car. Besides that, it also happens to be the name of a four-piece band from Maryland, USA, with a 25-year long career, 11 awesome albums and countless live gigs all around the world in their record.
This little band decided to visit Greece once again after 2 years since their last gig. With no further ado, here’s what went down:

First thing that I did, was buy a pack of smokes . . .
Being a hot Wednesday in August, the Athenians honored the two bands with their early presence. The time was 21:00 in the fully crowded venue of Iera Odos when Tuber made their appearance. It was a great chance for this instrumental band from Serres, Greece to receive some of its deserving recognition. However, if it was my call, I would not choose them to open the gig, due to their style being somewhat different compared to the headliners Clutch. No matter, the audience seemed to enjoy the post rock melodies the band had in its inventory. They executed humbly, yet skillfully tracks mostly from their exceptional record Desert Overcrowded.

While introducing themselves with heavy riffs from Last Drop, the first signs of headbanging took place and soon the whole venue seemed like a pulsing surface to us who were on the balcony. The track that is the most worth mentioning is Desert Overcrowded, which it’s sure to mesmerize every listener with its slightly stoner and melodies and psychedelic buildups. Unfortunately, it was the last song we heard from them, due to an unexpected gear fail. However, the greek audience rewarded them with a more than warm applause. May we see them live soon, with some new material from their record on the works.

Despite the early departure of the support band, Neil, Tim Dan and Jean-Paul appeared on stage according to schedule, on 22:30 and with a simple “Ya sas” they exploded like a d-d-d-dynamite in X-Ray Visions followed by Firebirds. The lyrical surrealism continues with the classic Burning Beard when the frontman of the band incarnated the nickname of “The Preacher”, while his flock was helping him with his chants.

“Look at all this people! Again?! Again?!”. He seemed to not believe in his eyes in the sight of the sea of people before him. Back to Psychic Warfare (which is real, by the way) by playing 3 songs in a row, the most noteworthy being Son Of Virginia. A worthy successor of The Regulator, this song was great except for the kind of loud lead guitar that overshadowed the vocals. And while we’re on the subject of sound quality, yeah, it was not the best all the time. But not like the playing of guitarist Tim Sult, the gentle power of the band.

The surprise of the night came with the ancient Escape From The Prison Planet, which most old school fans of the band surely appreciated. If this particular song was to be a painting, the artist would be Salvador Dali living in the 21st century. The cherry on top was the highly anticipated Spacegrass, this hymn to psychedelia (from which Clutch got stuck with the misleading -in my opinion- label of stoner rock band). This was a good chance for us to listen to the heavy tone of Dan Maines’ bass guitar. After that, they returned to more recent stuff and specifically the groovy D.C. Sound Attack. These cowbells always get me. And this is where this band seems to be extra awesome: giving us 3 songs each of them extended with jam sessions, enriching pleasantly their musical material on stage.

Following in the set, another triad from the latest album, unluckily without the presence of Our Lady Of Electric Light, but thankfully the catchy southern A Quick Death In Texas, during which many moshpits and crowd surfing occurred. Once again, we experienced the phenomenon called Cypress Grove, this too being accompanied by a jam session lead by drummer Jean-Paul Gaster who masterfully demonstrated his rhythm skills. And of course, The Regulator could not be absent from this show, the song that introduced so many in the rock’n’roll universe of Clutch, and all of them sang along as one. It was after that when the vocalist expressed that: “We’ve been on tour for the last 3 weeks and I think it would be safe to say that we’ve been looking forward to this show the most.” Thank you, sir Neil. We will keep trying to keep it that way.

Time for some full country mode. Gravel Road is what I’m talking about! An underrated song, on my humble opinion, but the crowed seemed to respond in excitement in the sound of it. And this seemed to be the end. For now.
Telekinetic, dynamite!
It wouldn’t be a proper gig if there wasn’t not the standard torture of the encore. After an endless 5-minute waiting, Clutch decided to do us a favor and return to stage for 2.5 songs. I think that all of already knew which song would they be. The Mob Goes Wild, the most literal song in the history of songs and of course the all-time classic and most popular Electric Worry / One Eye Dollar, where hell broke loose in front of the stage. The band was once again glorified.
The one thing that makes this group of people so awesome (besides the fact that they write awesome music) is that no matter how many times someone sees them live, they will never get bored of them. Their sets are so diverse and they produce a huge amount of energy with their performance. It might be mostly on the back of their frontman, but there is no doubt that we’re talking about a quartet of inspired expert musicians and most of all, Lifers For The Rock ‘N’ Roll!

“Κοίτα όλο αυτόν τον κόσμο! Για άλλη μια φορά!”
Clutch.
Αυτό.
Τι, δεν σας φτάνει; Πφφ, καλά.
Όλοι οι fans του σκληρού ήχου πλέον γνωρίζουμε πολύ καλά τι σημαίνει Clutch. Σημαίνει συμπλέκτης. Πέρα όμως από αυτό, τυχαίνει να είναι και το όνομα ενός τετραμελούς συγκροτήματος από το Maryland των Η.Π.Α. με μια καριέρα 25 χρόνων, 11 δισκάρες και αμέτρητες εκρηκτικές live εμφανίσεις σε όλο τον κόσμο.
Αυτή η μικρή μπάντα αποφάσισε να επισκεφθεί τη χώρα μας για άλλη μια φορά μετά από 2 χρόνια. Χωρίς άλλα περιττά λόγια, ορίστε τι συνέβη:

Όντας μία ζεστή Τετάρτη του Αυγούστου, το Αθηναϊκό κοινό τίμησε από νωρίς με την παρουσία του τα συγκροτήματα. Η ώρα 21:00 στο κατάμεστο venue της Ιεράς Οδού και οι Tuber έκαναν την εμφάνισή τους. Μια τέλεια ευκαιρία για το instrumental συγκρότημα από τις Σέρρες να λάβει την αναγνώριση που του αξίζει. Αν και αν ήταν στο χέρι μου δεν θα το επέλεγα να ανοίξει την συγκεκριμένη βραδιά, λόγω διαφορών στο στυλ τους σε σχέση με τους headliners Clutch. Ασχέτως, το κοινό φάνηκε να απολαμβάνει τις post μελωδίες που είχαν ετοιμάσει για μας. Με σχετικά ταπεινή σκηνική παρουσία, αλλά ιδιαίτερη δεξιοτεχνία εκτέλεσαν κομμάτια κυρίως από τον εξαίρετο δίσκο τους Desert Overcrowded.

Ανοίγοντας με το βαρύ κι ασήκωτο Last Drop, τα πρώτα headbangings δεν άργησαν να σχηματιστούν και σύντομα ο χώρος μπροστά από την σκηνή έμοιαζε από ψηλά με παλλόμενη επιφάνεια σε εμάς που βρισκόμασταν στον εξώστη. Αξιοσημείωτο φυσικά το ομότιτλο του άλμπουμ που σίγουρα θα σε ταξιδέψει με τις ελαφρώς stoner και στα όρια της ψυχεδέλειας συνθέσεις του. Δυστυχώς ήταν και το τελευταίο που ακούσαμε από τους Σερραίους, λόγω μιας αναπάντεχης αναποδιάς με τον εξοπλισμό. Ωστόσο το ελληνικό κοινό τους επιβράβευσε με ένα παραπάνω από θερμό χειροκρότημα. Εις το επανιδείν και σύντομα με καινούριο υλικό.

Ανεξάρτητα από την πρόωρη αποχώρηση των Tuber, οι Neil, Tim, Dan και Jean-Paul, έσκασαν μύτη στην προγραμματισμένη ώρα των 22:30, όπου με ένα λιτό “Ya sas” έβαλαν μπουρλότο στον χώρο με το d-d-d-dynamite του X-Ray Visions και στα καπάκια Firebirds. Ο στιχουργικός σουρεαλισμός συνεχίστηκε με το κλασσικό Burning Beard, όπου ο frontman της μπάντας ενσάρκωσε στο έπακρο το ψευδώνυμο του “Κήρυκα”, ενώ στους ψαλμούς είχε και την βοήθεια του ποιμνίου του.

“Κοίτα όλο αυτόν τον κόσμο! Για άλλη μια φορά!”. Φαινόταν να μην πιστεύει στα μάτια του, αντικρίζοντας τον ενθουσιασμό της λαοθάλασσας που απλωνόταν μπροστά του. Επιστροφή στο Psychic Warfare με 3 απανωτά κομμάτια με το Son Of Virginia να ξεχωρίζει περισσότερο. Ένας άξιος διάδοχος του The Regulator, με μόνο παράπονο τον κάπως μπουκωμένο ήχο της κιθάρας του Fallon, που σκέπαζε τα φωνητικά. Μιας και το αναφέραμε, να σημειωθεί πως ο ήχος αν και αξιοπρεπής την περισσότερη ώρα του live, έχανε σε αρκετά σημεία την ποιότητά του. Όχι όμως και το παίξιμο της ευγενούς δύναμης της μπάντας, του Tim Sult.

Η έκπληξη της βραδιάς έγινε με το αρχαίο πλέον Escape From The Prison Planet, που οι περισσότεροι “παλιοί” φίλοι της μπάντας σίγουρα θα εκτίμησαν. Αν αυτό το τραγούδι ήταν πίνακας, θα είχε ζωγραφιστεί από τον Salvador Dali, αν ζούσε στον 21ο αιώνα. Το κερασάκι μας ήρθε με το ακόμα πιο πολυαναμενόμενο Spacegrass, αυτό τον ύμνο στην ψυχεδέλεια (από το οποίο οι Clutch κόλλησαν και την άστοχη κατ’ εμέ ταμπέλα της stoner μπάντας). Εκεί είχαμε την ευκαιρία να ακούσουμε για μία φορά καθαρά το βαρύ ηχόχρωμα του μπάσου του Dan Maines. Επιστροφή στην εποχή του Earth Rocker με το grooveάτο D.C. Sound Attack. Cowbells λέω και κλαίω. Και εδώ φαίνεται το μεγαλείο αυτής της τετράδας, καθώς επέκτειναν και τρία αυτά τραγούδια με αυτοσχεδιαστικά jam sessions, εμπλουτίζοντας ευχάριστα το μουσικό περιεχόμενο της βραδιάς.

Άλλη μια τριάδα από τον τελευταίο δίσκο, δυστυχώς δίχως το Our Lady Of Electric Light, αλλά ευτυχώς με το ήδη αγαπημένο και πιασάρικο southern A Quick Death In Texas, το οποίο φυσικά και συνόδευσαν τα moshpits και crowd surfing. Για άλλη μια φορά ακούσαμε και το εκρηκτικό Cypress Grove σε εκτεταμένη έκδοση, στην οποία ο drummer Jean-Paul Gaster είχε την ευκαιρία να κάνει επίδειξη των εντυπωσιακών του ρυθμικών ικανοτήτων. Και φυσικά το The Regulator, με το οποίο τόσοι πολλοί γνώρισαν το rock’n’roll σύμπαν των Clutch, και εξέφρασαν την αγάπη τους τραγουδώντας το σαν ένα. Τότε ήταν που ο τραγουδιστής δεν δίστασε να εκφράσει πως: “Είμαστε σε περιοδεία εδώ και τρεις εβδομάδες. και πρέπει να παραδεχτούμε πως το show για το οποίο ανυπομονούσαμε περισσότερο, είναι το αποψινό.” Ευχαριστούμε, Neil, θα κάνουμε ό,τι μπορούμε για να παραμείνει έτσι αυτή η κατάσταση.

Ώρα για κάτι σε full country mode. Gravel Road και δεν συμμαζεύεται. Ένα κατά την γνώμη μου underrated τραγούδι, που παραδόξως ο κόσμος έδειξε να ανταποκρίνεται θερμά. Και έτσι μας αποχαιρέτησαν. Προσωρινά.
Telekinetic, dynamite!
Δεν θα ήταν σωστή συναυλία, αν δεν υπήρχαν τα καθιερωμένα καψώνια. Μετά από ένα βασανιστικό 5λεπτο, οι Clutch αποφάσισαν να μας κάνουν τη χάρη να επιστρέψουν για 2.5 ακόμα τραγούδια. Θεωρώ πως όλοι μας γνωρίζαμε ποια ήταν αυτά. The Mob Goes Wild για ξυλίκι δίχως έλεος και προφανώς το all time classic και πιο δημοφιλές τους τραγούδι Electric Worry / One Eye Dollar όπου και έγινε η αποθέωσή τους από το κοινό.
Το καλό με αυτό το συγκρότημα (πέρα από το ότι γράφουν κομματάρες) είναι ότι όσες φορές και να τους δει κανείς δεν τους βαριέται ποτέ. Και αυτό λόγω της ποικιλίας των σετ τους και της μεγάλης ενέργειας που εκπέμπει η μουσική τους. Μπορεί ο frontman τους να έχει αναλάβει να κουβαλήσει στις πλάτες του όλη την σκηνική παρουσία δεν χωράει όμως αμφιβολία πως πρόκειται για ένα εξαιρετικά δεμένο κουαρτέτο με πολύ έμπνευση για νέες συνθέσεις και κυρίως πρόκειται για Lifers For The Rock ‘N’ Roll!
