It’s the first appearance of The Re-Stoned in Greece and specifically at the historic An Club in Exarheia. Being a cold Thursday night, I didn’t have high expectations for the attendance so I walked in a quite empty venue.
The hard job of the welcoming was assigned to Breath After Coma, who got up the stage with no delay. They opened their act with the catchy Every Day King in a flawless performance. The first impressions were confirmed by the applause of the growing crowd while the young rockers proceeded to present to us the rest short tracks from their first mini album. In addition we got to listen to two new songs from their upcoming release, always on the field of alternative/grunge rock.

The time was about 21:50 when Solarmonkeys appeared and got Inside Your Head. A well-tuned band with a good riff-based performance and great vocals, they warmed up the audience as they played tracks from their debut Playblack. The personal favorite Don’t Bother is worth mentioning, being so upbeat and it gets stuck in your head for hours. Also, I give my respect to the guitarist who encouraged the crowd to support all the bands in the merch booth.

It was time for the Russian headliners to take action. At the first guitar notes, the (until then) hesitant crowd instantly gathered in front of the stage and the atmosphere in An Club changed to the better. I thought there’s not much to say about an instrumental band, but I’ll do my best to describe my experience. The Re-Stoned decided to start with a safe option, Northern Lights, from their (perhaps) most heard album Analog, and without any pause they proceeded to perform Sea Monk, in which Aleksei Volnov kept the pace steadily in this fast track, while the guitar got on fire in the hands of Ilya.
The set continued with the deceiving relaxing intro of Faces Of The Earth followed by fuzzy riffs which caused the first headbangings in front of the stage. Next was Land Of The Crimson Clouds, a promising title for a great track from their upcoming album. During that time, bassist Alexander Romanov was able to demonstrate his skills by performing a short solo (while everyone was shouting – everyone shouts during a bass solo for some f*ing reason).
Time for the first promised jam session where the mastermind of the band, Ilya Lipkin improvised on stage (or at least that’s what it seemed), before the band performed the trippy Green Line. Humbly thanking the audience, the Russians kept playing the Barbarian Hymn and then the second, longer jam session which included lots of improvised effects. During the Supernova that followed, the space in front of the stage resembled one, as it caused the first mosh pit of the night, something that seemed to surprise the musicians (from what we could tell by their subtle expressions).
The Re-Stoned appear to be a band that respect their roots, since they closed their gig with two tracks from their early works: the simple in composition but still awesome (and personal favorite) Return, and Sleeping World from their amazing first album Revealed Gravitation, a track that includes all of the essence of The Re-Stoned in its 5 and half minutes; robust bassline, rich drum fills and great guitar solos enhanced with the wahs and other pedal effects that the silent guitarist handled masterfully on stage.
And the trio was about to get off stage and greet us goodnight, when they stood still hearing the cries of the audience asking for more music, something that surprised me, considering that the metro was about to close down in the next 10 minutes. So they decided to satisfy our need with another long jam (or a new track?), and the Greeks thanked them by forming another mosh pit in the small space of An Club, ending the most psychedelic live of December.
We hope Ilya and his mates return soon as Maat Lander, for more space psychedelia.

Πρώτη εμφάνιση των The Re-Stoned στην χώρα μας και συγκεκριμένα στο ιστορικό An Club των Εξαρχείων. Μην έχοντας υψηλές προσδοκίες για την ανταπόκριση του κόσμου, όντας Πέμπτη βράδυ με παγωνιά και την τιμή του εισιτηρίου να είναι στο εικοσάρικο στην είσοδο, κατεβήκαμε τα σκαλιά και βρεθήκαμε σε ένα σχετικά άδειο μαγαζί.
Breath After Coma
Τον δύσκολο ρόλο του καλωσορίσματος ανέλαβαν οι νεαροί Breath After Coma ανεβαίνοντας στην σκηνή δίχως αποκλίσεις από το πρόγραμμα και άνοιξαν την βραδιά με το catchy Every Day King σε άψογη εκτέλεση. Οι πρώτες εντυπώσεις επιβεβαιώθηκαν στη συνέχεια από το χειροκρότημα του κόσμου που άρχιζε σιγά σιγά να πληθαίνει όσο οι rockers μας παρουσίαζαν με καλή διάθεση τα ολιγόλεπτα περιεχόμενά του mini album τους. Επιπλέον είχαμε την ευκαιρία να ακούσουμε δύο νέα τραγούδια για τον δίσκο που ετοιμάζουν, πάντα στα alternative με δόσεις grunge χωράφια τους.

Solarmonkeys
Η ώρα πλησίαζε 21:50 όταν οι Solarmonkeys έκαναν την εμφάνισή τους και δίχως πολλά λόγια βρέθηκαν Inside Your Head. Δεμένη μπάντα με καλή παρουσία, βασισμένη σε riffs και καλοδουλεμένα φωνητικά ζέσταναν το όλο και αυξανόμενο κοινό, όσο έπαιζαν κομμάτια από το ντεμπούτο τους Playblack. Αξιοσημείωτο και αγαπημένο το Don’t Bother με τον κολλητικό ρυθμό και ρεφραίν. Να πω και ένα μπράβο στον κιθαρίστα (που εκτελούσε ρόλο frontman αντί του τραγουδιστή για κάποιο λόγο) ο οποίος δεν παρέλειψε να ενθαρρύνει τον κόσμο να στηρίξει τις μπάντες στο merch booth.

Ευχόμαστε τα καλύτερα και στις δύο νέες ελληνικές μπάντες για την σταδιοδρομία τους.
The Re-Stoned
Έφτασε και η ώρα για το ρωσικό τρίο να πάρει την σκυτάλη. Στο πρώτο άκουσμα της κιθάρας, το μέχρι τότε διστακτικό κοινό μαζεύτηκε μπροστά από το stage και αμέσως το An πήρε μία άλλη ατμόσφαιρα. Δεν υπάρχουν και πολλά πράγματα που μπορεί να πει κανείς για να περιγράψει ένα instrumental σχήμα, αλλά υπόσχομαι να κάνω το καλύτερο που μπορώ για να μεταδώσω την εμπειρία μου με τον καλύτερο τρόπο. Οι The Re-Stoned αποφάσισαν να ανοίξουν με μία safe επιλογή, το Northern Lights από τον (ίσως) πιο πολυακουσμένο τους δίσκο Analog και δίχως παύση πέρασαν στο Sea Monk με τον Aleksei Volnov να κρατάει σταθερά τον ρυθμό στα drums όσο η κιθάρα έπιανε φωτιά κάτω από τα δάχτυλα του Ilya.

Το set συνεχίστηκε με την παραπλανητική χαμηλών τόνων εισαγωγή του Faces Of The Earth κατευθυνόμενη από τα γεμάτα fuzz riffs τα οποία έδωσαν και το σήμα για τα πρώτα headbangings. Παράλληλα, μεταξύ των κομματιών ένας ενθουσιώδης οπαδός επέμενε να εκφράζει την “αγάπη” του για το κόμμα του ΠΑΣΟΚ και τον Χριστούλη (ό,τι να ναι). Ακολούθησε το Land Of The Crimson Clouds από τον επερχόμενο δίσκο τους στο οποίο δόθηκε και η ευκαιρία στον Alexander Romanov να επιδείξει τις ικανότητές του σολάροντας στο μπάσο.

Και ώρα για το πρώτο υποσχόμενο jam session όπου ο ιθύνων νους της μπάντας Ilya Lipkin αυτοσχεδίασε επί σκηνής (ή τουλάχιστον έτσι μας έκανε να πιστέψουμε) προτού η μπάντα προβεί στο χαλαρωτικά ταξιδιάρικο Green Line. Με σύντομες ευχαριστίες για το χειροκρότημα του κοινού, οι Ρώσοι συνέχιζαν ακάθεκτοι με το Barbarian Hymn και το δεύτερο jam session τους που περιλάμβανε μπόλικες δόσεις από αυτοσχεδιασμένα εφέ, ενώ στο Supernova που ακολούθησε σχηματίστηκε το πρώτο pit της βραδιάς, γεγονός που έδειξε να εκπλήσσει τους μουσικούς (απ’ όσο μπορέσαμε να διακρίνουμε από τις διακριτικές εκφράσεις τους).

Οι The Re-Stoned δείχνουν να είναι ένα συγκρότημα με σεβασμό στις ρίζες τους, καθώς έκλεισαν το set τους με δύο τραγούδια από τις πρώτες δουλειές τους: το απλό σε σύνθεση αλλά πορωτικό (και προσωπικά αγαπημένο) Return, και το Sleeping World από την δισκάρα Revealed Gravitation, ένα τεμάχιο που ίσως έχει συμπυκνωμένο σε 5μιση λεπτά όλο το είναι των The Re-Stoned. Στιβαρή μπασογραμμή, γεμίσματα στα drums και απίστευτα σόλο ενισχυμένα από τα wah και τα εφέ πεταλιών που με τόση επιδεξιότητα ο σιωπηλός κιθαρίστας διαχειριζόταν επί σκηνής.
Κι εκεί που το τρίο ετοιμάστηκε να ξεστήσει για να μας καληνυχτίσει, κοντοστάθηκε στο άκουσμα των επικλήσεων του κόσμου για συνέχιση της συναυλίας, γεγονός που εξέπληξε ακόμα και μένα αν σκεφτεί κανείς ότι το Μετρό θα έκλεινε σε 10 λεπτά. Και έτσι αποφάσισαν με ακόμα ένα μακροσκελές jam (ή νέο κομμάτι;) να ικανοποιήσουν και το ελληνικό κοινό, το οποίο έδειξε την αγάπη του σχηματίζοντας ακόμα ένα pit στο μικρό χώρο του An, κλείνοντας έτσι το πιο ψυχεδελικό live του Δεκέμβρη.
Ελπίζουμε να επιστρέψουν σύντομα ως Maat Lander για περισσότερη space ψυχεδέλεια.
